We are not of course the only people working on Chinese intellectuals and translation.  This menu provides links to other sites, people, and projects related to our concerns.  We're just getting started, so if we've overlooked you and your project, don't feel snubbed!  Instead send me an email at [email protected] and I'll do my best to acomodate you.

The richest set of resources treating Chinese intellectual life is surely found in the cluster of websites and publications created by Geremie Barmé and his brilliant team of collaborators at Australian National University and elsewhere in Australia (and now in New Zealand).  These include, for starters:
  • The China Story
  • East Asian History
  • Made in China
  • The China Journal
  • China Heritage

Sebastien Veg has a very useful bibliography of English-language translations (as well as some in French and German).  His personal web site also contains a wealth of useful information, much of it treating Chinese intellectual life.

Another resource is Chinese Public Intellectuals:  An Annotated Bibliography to Published Translations in English, put together by David Ownby, with the capable assistance of a number of graduate students at UBC.

Other useful sites include:
  • Fifty Influential Public Intellectuals, edited by Nicolai Volland, Heidelberg University, 2006.
  • Key Intellectuals, edited by Geremie Barmé and Gloria Davies, The China Story, ANU.
  • Authors Translated, edited by Yaxue Cao, China Change, US.
  • Various journals regularly publish translations of essays by Chinese intellectuals: New Left Review,China Perspectives, Renditions, Journal of Contemporary Chinese Thought.
  • Various news or advocacy websites also publish essays by Chinese intellectuals:China Digital Times, China File
  • ThinkIN China http://www.thinkinchina.asia/

Timothy Cheek has also prepared two annotated bibliographies for Oxford Bibliographies Online:
  • Establishment Intellectuals
  • Political Dissent
